Study of fibers, yarns and fabrics. Industry applications and end usage are examined.
Course Objectives
Know and use correct terminology to identify and discuss textiles
Analyze the textile industry and understand the evaluation of apparel and interior textiles
Identify the chemical structure and properties of textiles (fiber, yarn, construction method/structure, and finish, including color) and relate to textile characteristics and to scientific principles as a means of explaining performance and serviceability
Identify fibers, yarns, and fabrics by construction methods/structures and relate construction methods to textile characteristics as a means of explaining performance and serviceability
Comprehend the interrelationships of the components of textile products (fiber, yarn, construction method/structure, and finish, including color), science principles and the importance of these interrelationships in the selection, use, and care of textiles
Digital Swatch Kit
A digital collection of found online swatches is illustrated below. Textiles such as tweed suiting, challis, and jersey were identified by fiber content, yarn type, construction method, dye/print method, finish, and end use.
Outcomes
As a result of this course, Megan Marie was able to identify the chemical structure and properties of textiles. Textile performance and serviceability is vital to know throughout the designing and product development process, especially when swatches are considered.
